Millie Huang once said, "By Chance we met, by choice we become friend."

I met Vishal an year ago at Facebook and gradually, we became friends after our first meeting.

I am a bibliophile. I love to read a lot. I can skip my food, my sleep in the process of reading. Talking with authors always fascinates me. But Vishal's case was different. I never felt, I am talking with a published author. He's so down to earth and friendly. However, it took long to convince myself to read his short story collection as I prefer reading novels.

On the third anniversary of Emotions Unplugged's release today, I would like to share the book review as my first blog post. So, here, I begin.

Emotions Unplugged is written by a research professional, Vishal Anand based out of Bangalore. The collection has managed to become my favorite collection of short stories. This is the first collection I have read apart from my prescribed course books and I would never regret reading it.

Book Cover:

The cover portrays the various emotions, every human deals with. It projects how human shows their emotions through various facial expressions. The white background gives peace to the inner turmoil post reading the stories.

The Review:

Language and Style: The book has been written in a very simple language, which even a school-going student can read and understand. One does not need to open a dictionary, looking for meaning. This clearly means that common people who belong from any field can read it easily and correlate it directly. Vishal wrote most of the stories in first person which makes the book readers feel that it is their own story while reading it.

A look at few of my favourite ones!

There are fifteen different, but awesome stories from fifteen different cities. I would not get into much detailing. However, I would love to say about few stories that touched my heart and I felt that I could relate these stories with myself.

A Day before My Divorce: It talks about how a couple feels hurt by the mere thought of separation from the social restriction called marriage. The author has portrayed the bond more than the term, marriage itself. This story is about the feelings of two souls, which are inseparable, who finally find a way and post realization of their individual faults, cope up with the evil divorce.

One Wild Night: A smile appeared on my face after reading it. I read the story twice and the endnote numerous times. I really enjoyed reading this story.

And God Said Yes!: This one is my favorite among all the stories. It portrays the orthodox mindset of a mother about religion; how it changes with time and situation significantly. It touched my heart. I can really connect myself as I am kind of secular or one, who follows every religion without any term or condition. Narrator won my heart at the end of the story by saying “She will be an Indian”. This sentence strengthened me belief that happy endings do exist.

Flowers of Hope: A story of a brave girl who did what she felt right to her sense without caring about the society. Very few have the courage to do something different from others and for others.

All the stories were fair enough in their places, not at all exaggerated with tough words and scenarios, which I can not only imagine but can feel in my day-to-day life. I believe readers too can feel the pain of separation, idea of Gandhigiri, feeling of an honest thief, the love for grandparents, teenager purest form of love, transformation of a dacoit, awkward situation of meeting your “Ex” and so on.

All the stories are well knitted and put very beautifully. The best part of reading short stories is that you do not have to complete them in one go. You can read according to the time and convenience you have.

In all, you did a remarkable job, Vishal! You built in me a hope that someday I too can write a story as simple as you wrote with common, general words. Hoping for more reads from your pen. All the very best for your upcoming assignments!

I would like to rate Emotions Unplugged a 5 out of 5 stars!
